Academy+ is all about learning beyond the classroom, and 144 Samworth Church Academy students certainly did that when they made their home for 5 days among the tents and trees of the Bushcraft Company's site at Castle Howard in North Yorkshire.
Students learned survival skills such as making shelters, survival first aid, archery and had fun making smores, doing a talent show and of course singing songs around a campfire. The Year 7 residential trip is not only about developing teamwork, resilience and problem-solving skills, but also forging new friendships as our newest Samworth Church Academy cohort gets to know each other.
As one parent told us afterwards:
"My son came home and told us some crazy, lovely stories of amazing experiences, memories, and tales of building friendships."
The Samworth Church Academy is proud to provide this learning experience free of charge to all year 7 students. Bushcraft Adventure week was funded by Academy+, the charitable branch of the Samworth Church Academy.
Academy+ funds ambitious projects at the Samworth Church Academy to provide our children with the extra skills, character development and experiences they need to have a further 70 great years after they leave the Academy.
We have called it Academy+ because it provides support and experiences in a way that the standard curriculum does not. Each year the Department for Education send us an amount of money per child and we use this money in the best way possible to give our children the education they need. But to become a well rounded and resilient person, we believe they need to experience things outside the normal curriculum. And that's where Academy+ comes in, meaning a whole year group of children can experience brilliant, horizon-expanding residential trip, far beyond what most schools can offer, and at no cost to our Samworth Church families.
Academy+ relies on the generous donations of our supporters to provide our young people with amazing opportunities like Bushcraft Adventure week.
